National Rural Education Association

The NREA (National Rural Education Association) was originally founded as the Department of Rural Education in 1907. It is the oldest established national organization of its kind in the United States.

Through the years it has evolved as a strong and respected organization of rural school administrators, teachers, board members, regional service agency personnel, researchers, business and industry representatives, and others interested in maintaining the vitality of rural school systems across the country.

Announcing the creation of OSRC!

As of 2013, the Ohio Department of Education typology study classified 431 School districts- the majority in the state- as small or rural by population. 665,000 students are served in rural and small-town settings. Thousands more open enroll to suburban or urban districts as well.

20 rural and small districts are considered exemplars based on their typology. Many of our leading districts can provide resources to colleagues and students with the right venues provided them at the local, state, and national level. The need for small and rural access to resources, programming, advocacy, and networking has never been greater.
